The Zambian artist Henry Tayali, the sculptor of The Bull on the airport road, died in Germany in 1987, just 43 years old. The Henry Tayali Visual Art Centre was named in recognition of his tireless efforts to raise the profile of indigenous African art and crafts in Zambia. The Art Centre is the hub of Zambian art in Lusaka and the home of the Zambia National Visual Arts Council.
The centre, as well as being an art gallery with many works of art and sculptures for sale, offers artists space to meet clients and fellow artists to exchange ideas and to learn. The centre also sells professional quality art materials as well as crafts, baskets, drums and clay pots.
The Zambia National Visual Arts Council is an organisation founded and run by artists to promote and develop visual arts in Zambia by providing artistic support and education and by creating a supportive environment where artists can develop their skills and try to make a living from their talent.
The Visual Arts Council works as a contact centre where clients can be put in contact with artists for commissions.
The Henry Tayali Center also has facilities and equipment available for hire to the public such as photo lab, framing equipment, professional image printer etc.
